TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iran's two-time Paralympic gold medalist Majid Farzin won a gold medal at the World Para Powerlifting Championships underway in Mexico City on Wednesday.

The Iranian started as favorite, especially after setting a world record of 240kg at Rio 2016 to finish ahead of Gu Xiaofei on the podium in a repeat of London 2012.

The Chinese emerged triumphant the only time they competed against each other outside the Paralympic Games, when he topped the podium at the 2014 Asian Para Games.

In the men's up to 80kg in Mexico City, Farzin won the gold medal with 227kg.

Xiaofei seized the silver medal after lifting 222kg.

The bronze medal went to Jordan's Abdelkareem Khattab with 221kg.
